Anti-inflammatories such as naproxen or diclofenac increase the risk of disease by more than 40% cardiovascular disease in osteoarthritis patients

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with osteoarthritis.

A new study published in Arthritis & Rheumatology provides new evidence that anti-inflammatory drugs Nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) contribute to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with osteoarthritis.

The study, whose main author is Dr. Aslam Anis, from the University of British Columbia (Canada), analyzed the data to determine the degree of increased cardiovascular risk attributable exclusively to the use of NSAIDs.

“To our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the mediating role of the use of NSAIDs. In the relationship between osteoarthritis and cardiovascular disease in a large population sample”, comments Dr. Anis.

Heart

The study compared 7,743 patients. The study found that about 41 percent of the increase in risk of cardiovascular disease could be attributed to the use of NSAIDs.

In other words: more than 40 percent of the increased cardiovascular risk in people with osteoarthritis is due to a medication used for the treatment of disease.

The study also indicates that the risk of heart failure, angina pectoris, cardiac ischemia and heart attack were also higher in people with osteoarthritis, and again, NSAIDs were the cause of a significant percentage of increased risk.

“Our findings are very relevant, since NSAIDs are among the most used drugs for pain management in patients with osteoarthritis (…) It is important for people with osteoarthritis to discuss the risks and benefits of NSAIDs with their doctor, concludes Dr. Anis.
